Home Automation is a hot topic right now, with numerous standards being proposed to provide connectivity to devices in order that the residential environment can be more effective and more enjoyable.
ZigBee Home Automation is the preferred wireless connectivity standard and uses the ZigBee PRO mesh networking stack, ensuring that hundreds of devices can connect reliably. The Home Automation profile provides functionality that allows home devices to be controlled or monitored. This can be broken down into three areas; 1)Securely commissioning devices into the network, 2)providing data connectivity between devices and 3) Providing a common lanuguage for communication between devices.
Security within the ZigBee network is handled by encrypting datausing the AES algorithm, seeded by a network security key. This is chosen randomly by the network coordinator and is therefore unique, protecting against casual interception of data. OWON’s HASS 6000 connected tags can transfer the network information in to the device before it is connected. Any Internet connection to the system can also be secured using the 6000 range of elements to manage security keys, encryption etc.
The common language that defines the interface to devices comes from the Zigbee “clusters”. These are sets of commands that enable the device to be controlled according to its functionality. For example, a monochrome dimmable light uses clusters for on/off, Level control, and behaviour in scenes and groups, as well as those allowing it to manage its membership of the network.
The functionality offered by ZigBee Home Automation, enabled by the OWON range of products gives easeof use, security and high performance reliable networking and provides the bedrock of an Internet of Things installation for the home.
