What are VOC、VOCs and TVOC?

v1

1. VOC

VOC substances refer to volatile organic substances. VOC stands for Volatile Organic compoundS. VOC in general sense is the command of generative organic matter; But the definition of environmental protection refers to a kind of volatile organic compounds that are active, that can produce harm.

In fact, VOCs can be divided into two categories:

One is the general definition of VOC, only what is volatile organic compounds or under what conditions are volatile organic compounds;

The other is the environmental definition, that is, the active ones, the ones that cause harm. It is obvious that volatilization and participation in atmospheric photochemical reactions are very important from an environmental point of view. Do not volatilize or do not participate in atmospheric photochemical reaction does not constitute a hazard.

2.VOCS

In China, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) refers to organic compounds with saturated vapor pressure greater than 70 Pa at normal temperature and boiling point below 260℃ under normal pressure, or all organic compounds with corresponding volatilizes at vapor pressure greater than or equal to 10 Pa at 20℃

From the point of view of environmental monitoring, refers to the total non-methane hydrocarbons detected by hydrogen flame ion detector, mainly including alkanes, aromatics, alkenes, halohydrocarbons, esters, aldehydes, ketones and other organic compounds. Here is the key to explain: VOC and VOCS are actually the same class of substances, that is, Volatile Organic Compounds abbreviation, because Volatile Organic Compounds in general more than one component, so VOCS more accurate.

3.TVOC

Indoor air quality researchers commonly refer to all the indoor Organic gaseous substances they sample and analyze as TVOC, which stands for the first letter of the three words Volatile Organic Compound, The vocs measured are collectively known as Total Volatile Organic CompoundS (TVOC). TVOC is one of the three kinds of pollution affecting indoor air quality.

The World Health Organization (WHO,1989) defined total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) as volatile organic compounds with melting point below room temperature and boiling point between 50 and 260℃. It can be evaporated in the air at room temperature. It is toxic, irritating, carcinogenic and special odor, which can affect the skin and mucous membrane and cause acute damage to the human body.

To sum up, in fact, the relationship among the three can be expressed as inclusion relation:
